Police received several calls around 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, about a man standing atop a cargo container outside the Boston Harbor Hotel on Rowes Wharf and firing flares at nearby boats, authorities said. Police did not release the South Boston man's name.
Police tried to talk the man down, but that only seemed to make him angrier as he started to throw things at them, including several uncapped hypodermic needles, authorities said. After the man stabbed himself in the arm several times with a needle, the officers climbed on top of the container to get him help.
As they were handcuffing the man, one of the officers said he felt a sharp pain from one of the uncapped needles stabbing into him.
Police took the man to an area hospital for treatment and charged him with assault and battery on a police officer, vandalism, trespassing, and disturbing the peace.
Authorities said the officer was taken to the hospital for treatment, but they have not released any updates on his condition.
